Photos taken at Exotic Zoo Resort in Johnson City, TX
May 3, 2009

This is a one of a kind preserve where several endangered species of animals have a chance to increase their numbers and at the same time allowing people to enjoy their beauty and company. The commitment of the Zoo is not only to maintain a healthy atmosphere for the animals, but help them to become people friendly. Everyone has a chance to have a hands on experience with all the animals. You not only can see them, but you can touch them! The following photos were taken when we visited the zoo with our grandchildren. Click here for more information about the zoo.

The Ostrich Encounter

The Ostrich is distinctive in its appearance, with a long neck and legs and the ability to run at speeds of about 46 mph, the top land speed of any bird. It is the largest living species of bird and lays the largest egg of any bird species. One ostrich egg is equivant to two dozen chicken eggs.

Rheas are large, flightless birds with gray-brown plumage, long legs and long necks, similar to an ostrich. These birds can reach 5.6 feet and weigh up to 88 pounds. Their wings are large for a flightless bird and are spread while running, to act like sails. Pictured below is a Rhea and several chicks that are camouflaged among the stones.  The male Rhea sits on tbe nest until the chicks hatch.
